The cabins open in mid-March.

THE CABINS

The Big Cabin c. 1855

The Big Cabin was built in the 1850's by David Basinger, one of the first settlers in the Caddo Gap area. In subsequent years, the structure served as a general store, a stagecoach stop and Masonic Lodge. Finally, just before the turn of the 20th century, Arkadelphia doctor, J.R. Dale, purchased the cabin and moved it to its present location. He used the cabin as a summer retreat for his family for many years.

The Big Cabin has three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living/dining room and a large kitchen.

The Cook Shack, c. 1900

Just down the hill from the Big Cabin is "The Cook Shack". Around 1900, when Dr. Dale purchased the old Basinger Cabin and moved it to its present location, he contructed two more smaller log cabins. The Cook Shack is an oblong shaped cabin which housed the family's kitchen, dining room and a small bedroom for the family chaffeur.

Now the three rooms are converted to cozy bedrooms on each end of the cabin, with a modern kitchenette in the center room. Behind the cabin, in a separate building, is a modern bathroom with a sink, toilet and shower.

The most popular spot at the Cook Shack, though, is the front porch, on which our guests sit for hours and are soothed into tranquilty by the gentle babbling sound of the spring-fed creeks running nearby, just a few yards from the cabin.

Dr. Dale employed a chauffeur and a cook for his family. While the chauffeur slept in a small bedroom in the "cook shack", the cook and her children lived in this small cabin.

The cabin has two floors. On the first floor, in one large room, is a full size bed; a modern kitchenette with table and benches, refrigerator and microwave; and a living room area with a large sofa, rocking chair and antique wardrobe. Upstairs is the sleeping loft, a spacious room with a queen size bed, a full size bed, a twin bed and a chest of drawers.

Just as with the Cook Shack, the Cook's Cabin has a modern bathroom in a separate building behind the cabin. A wooden walkway takes you from the back door of the cabin to the indoor bathroom, complete with sink, toilet and shower, or for the more adventurous, an outdoor shower surrounded by a privacy wall.

Wedding Bells

Congratulations to Kasey Hughes and Chad Lybrand! Chad proposed to Kasey at the cabins on Aug. 21, 2010, and on April 2, 2011 they were married at the cabins.

Chad's dad, J.D. Lybrand, helped us to rebuild the cabins when we bought the place in 1989.
